Evy Jolijn Deelen

Evy Jolijn Deelen is a ceramist that is inspired by the shapes and forms that surround her.
As a child she had a wild fantasy and created fascinating worlds to play in. The rabbit cage in the backyard of her parents wasn’t just a cage, in her eyes it was an elevator to the moon.
Growing up the playful vision stayed with her. During her education at Sint Lucas she brought life to the sketches she doodled in her booklets. Many of them pushing technical boundaries she never crossed before. Near the end of her period at Sint Lucas an internship at Husk sparked an unexpected love for ceramics.
Her time at Willem the Kooning academy in Rotterdam is
where she focused on ceramics and experimented with the limits of the material. At the same time her interest for social and serious world topics grew. Her projects became more
layered and the love for the earth and the people on it
became an important theme to highlight in her designs.
The playful vision she had while growing up stayed with her and it reflects on her works nowadays. Her inspiration comes from many things, from the shapes and forms in her everyday life to traveling and getting introduced to new cultures. The way she develops her designs is by playing around with the products and materials that are available in her studio and the nearby environment. Making design decisions based on what’s laying around can be tricky but making use of materials that already exist, often means creating less waste and that’s a way of working that lays close to her heart. Sometimes this way of working leads to practical designs and sometimes it takes a bit of imagination to get the true essence of what she created.
